Los resultados de las elecciones de 2016 apenas se han conocido y la atención ya se dirige a 2018.

No habrá una elección presidencial durante 2018, pero Nuevo México elegirá un nuevo gobernador y varios candidatos electos del estado se presentarán para la reelección.

El Senador de Estados Unidos, Tom Udall, quizás está anunciando el fin de su tiempo como candidato electo en Washington D.C. para postularse como gobernador.

“He escuchado a muchos ciudadanos de Nuevo México que me insisten para que me presente a gobernador. Me siento halagado por su apoyo, tengo la mente abierta y lo estoy considerando,” dijo Udall, del partido demócrata, en una declaración. “Sin embargo, muchos cambios están ocurriendo en nuestro país y, en este momento, estoy centrado en volver a Washington y luchar por las prioridades de Nuevo México. “

Udall ganó la elección del Senado por la primera vez en 2008, después de servir en la Cámara de Estados Unidos durante una década.

Pero, él no es el único que se está pensando postularse para gobernador.

La representante de Estados Unidos, Michelle Lujan Grisham, dijo en una entrevista telefónica que no iba a desechar ninguna posibilidad, pero aún no había pasado suficiente tiempo tras la elección como para poder tomar una decisión sobre si va a postularse para la posición más alta del estado.

“No he tenido la oportunidad de reflexionar sobre esto,” dijo Lujan Grisham. “Y quiero, realmente, hacer mi trabajo.”

Ella mencionó la infraestructura como algo que le gustaría ver abordar al Congreso.

En cuanto a un plazo para la decisión de postularse como gobernador, Lujam Grisham dijo que tendría que tomar una decisión antes de finales de 2017, debido a la cantidad de tiempo que debe destinarse a la recaudación de fondos- a menos que haya autofinanciación.

“Y no puedo autofinanciarme,” dijo Lujan Grisham.

Ella también dijo que considera que la nominación demócrata no será fácil en las primarias.

“Pienso que habrá unas primarias, porque hay unos demócratas muy buenos con una variedad de habilidades importantes,” ella dijo.

El Fiscal General, Héctor Balderas, es otro demócrata cuyo nombre aparece frecuentemente en estas especulaciones.

“El Fiscal General, Héctor Balderas, tiene preocupaciones profundas por nuestro estado y él evaluará la posibilidad de servir en puestos más elevados en un futuro próximo,” dijo Caroline Buerkle en una declaración, una estratega política que ha trabajado en el pasado con Balderas.

Del lado republicano, muchos creen que el teniente gobernador John Sanchez se postulará para la nominación.

Un portavoz de Sanchez respondió a una pregunta al respecto el jueves.

“En los últimos meses, muchos ciudadanos de Nuevo México, tanto demócratas como republicanos, le han pedido al teniente gobernador Sanchez que se postule como gobernador en 2018 y lo está considerando seriamente,” dijo Manny Gonzales, tesorero de la campaña de Sanchez. “En las próximas semanas, planea discutir esta posibilidad con su familia y sus seguidores y llegar a una decisión final sobre su futuro en el momento oportuno. Mientras tanto, continuará dedicando su tiempo a servir y ayudar a los ciudadanos del estado, como su teniente gobernador.”

Y el representante de Estados Unidos, Steve Pearce, que dejó su puesto en 2008 para afrontar una infructuosa carrera para el Senado de Estados Unidos, dijo al Albuquerque Journal que, en este momento, él se enfoca en la Cámara de Estados Unidos.

“Lo vamos a examinar en algún momento del próximo año,” dijo Pearce al diario.

El alcalde de Albuquerque, Richard Berry, un republicano, también ha sido mencionado como un candidato posible para gobernador.

La carrera para gobernador sería muy importante importante en 2018, por razones que no son habituales- tendrá que redefinir los distritos de unos escaños legislativos y congresuales durante el próximo mandato del gobernador. El gobernador también tendrá el poder de vetar cualquier mapa de reestructuración aprobado por la legislatura.
