Three things to look for on December 1

Here’s a new feature we’re going to do each weekday morning.

The feature “Three things to look for” will, well, let you know what three things you should look for that day. It could be legislative hearing, a court case, a story that we have coming later in the day or even something to do with sports or music.

Sometimes we might cheat a little and add an extra thing or two for particularly busy days.

If you have anything you want to lag for future days, feel free to email [email protected].

Anyway, here are three thing to watch for on Tuesday, December 1.
1. Courts, Corrections and Justice Interim Committee

iStock_000002715910_LargeWith the 2016 legislative session promising to be a session with crime legislation on the Legislature’s to-do list, this interim committee takes extra importance. On Tuesday, the committee will hear about Law Enforcement Assistance Diversion as an alternative to incarceration for some arrested for drugs at 9:30 a.m. and other topics through 5:00 p.m.

On Monday, the committee heard about how New Mexico’s violent crime rate is near the top of the nation and how it will take resources—especially money—to clear the state’s backlog in unprocessed rape kits.

2. ABQ city council swears in one newcomer

While the Albuquerque municipal elections in October weren’t the most exciting, the four winners will be sworn in for their terms on Tuesday. Three of the four are incumbents back for another term, while one—Pat Davis*—replaces a retired city councilor.

If you want to show up, it will be at 5:30 p.m. in Ballroom A of the Albuquerque Convention Center, across Civic Plaza from City Hall.

3. Holm-coming

OK, it’s not until Sunday but the city of Albuquerque announced on Monday that they will hold a parade for UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm. The Albuquerque-native shocked the world with a massive upset victory over Ronda Rousey two weeks ago.

The route is still undecided, but clear your calendar on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00.

Honorable Mention:

You know about Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, but do you know about Giving Tuesday?  It’s a day to encourage people to kick in a few dollars to deserving non-profits. There are many around the state, so pick your favorite.
