Martinez convoca a restablecer la pena de muerte en la sesión especial

El debate sobre la pena de muerte va a llegar a la legislatura más pronto de lo que muchos esperaban.

El martes por la mañana, Susana Martinez anunció que ella incluirá la pena de muerte a la lista para la próxima sesión especial, añadiendo una parte contenciosa del debate a la sesión especial que ya ha prometido sostener calurosos debates más allá de la fijación del déficit presupuestario masivo del estado.

Martinez aún no ha fijado una fecha para la sesión especial.

“Voy a pedir a la legislatura de traer de vuelta la pena de muerte como una opción para aquellos que matan a niños y agentes de policía, así como los funcionarios de prisiones,” Martinez escribió en una declaración en Facebook. “Estos horrendos crímenes merecen el castigo máximo.”

Ella dice que la Rep. Monica Youngblood, R-Albuquerque, y el Rep. Andy Nunez, R-Hatch, copatrocinarán el proyecto de ley de derogación de la pena de muerte.

Ella también anunció que Rep. Paul Pacheco otra vez patrocinar un proyecto de ley que expandir la ley de “three strikes” del estado que exige la cadena perpetua para aquellos que cometen tres crímenes de una lista determinada.

Anteriormente, Martinez dijo que la pena de muerte sería parte de su agenda para la sesión legislativa regular del año 2017.

Ahora, esta propuesta que atrae mucha atención estará en la agenda de la sesión especial, que probablemente llevará a cabo en el periodo antes de las elecciones de noviembre.

Una encuesta realizada el último mes por Public Policy para NM Political Report encontró que un 59 por ciento de votantes de Nuevo Mexico apoya la propuesta de traer de vuelta la pena de muerte.

La convocatoria de Martinez viene después de varias muertes de alto perfil, incluyendo el asesinado de múltiples oficiales de la policía en los últimos años y de varios niños que hizo titulares nacionales.

Cuando originalmente, en la convocatoria por el restablecimiento de la pena de muerte, Martinez mencionó el asesinado de los oficiales de la policía en Dallas.

Desde que se restableció la pena de muerte en 1976, New Mexico ha ejecutado sólo una persona, Terry Clark 2001. Clark fue condenado por violar y matar a una niña de seis años.

El exgobernador Bill Richardson firmó la ley para revocar la pena de muerte en 2009. Al firmar el proyecto de ley, Richardson dijo que no se oponía a la pena de muerte, pero no tenía la confianza que el sistema judicial puede ser 100 por ciento correcto.
