Doña Ana County sees big early voting numbers

Bernalillo County has the most residents and the most registered voters in the state—but right now, Doña Ana County has the most voters who have cast ballots early.

That is according to numbers from Tuesday morning from both counties, two counties with a number of key legislative races and the two counties with the largest number of registered voters, as of Sept. 30.

In Doña Ana County, 6,639 people voted early, as of 11:45 a.m. compared to 4,293 voters in Bernalillo County who cast their votes early as of approximately the same time.

That is 6 percent of registered voters in Doña Ana County and 1 percent of registered voters in Bernalillo County.

These numbers only include early, in-person votes and not absentee ballots that have been requested and turned in.

In both cases, Democrats cast more ballots than Republicans.

As of 11:50 a.m. Tuesday, 3,066 Democrats voted early in Bernalillo County, 685 Republicans and 542 decline-to-state or minor party voters.

In other words, 71 percent of early voters in Bernalillo County so far are Democrats, 16 percent are Republicans and 13 percent are either independents or members of minor parties.

As of Sept. 30, 47 percent of registered voters in Bernalillo County are Democrats, 30 percent are Republicans and 23 percent are no party or part of a minor party.

In Doña Ana County, the numbers by political party are from earlier in the day, when there were 6,372 early votes cast.

As of around 9 a.m. Tuesday, 3,680 Democrats, 1,823 Republicans and 869 of other or no political parties cast ballots.

This breaks down to 58 percent Democrats, 27 percent Republicans and 14 percent who are not members of either of the major party.

In Doña Ana County, again as of Sept. 30, 46 percent of registered voters are Democrats, 27 percent are Republicans and 26 percent are decline-to-state or members of a minor party.

NM Political Report will continue to look at early voting numbers in these and other counties until early voting ends in November.

Note: Percentages may not add up to 100 percent because of rounding.
