The managing editor of southern New Mexico’s largest newspaper announced her resignation, the newspaper said Wednesday.

It comes even as more jobs were lost at the paper.

Sylvia Ulloa was the managing editor of the Las Cruces Sun-News since 2013.

In speaking to the Sun-News, she called it her “sincere honor” to hold the position at the paper.

“I know they will continue to contribute to the well-being of Las Cruces and Doña Ana County with their watchdog stories and delight readers with great articles, photos and videos about people in our community,” the paper quoted Ulloa as saying. “I wish them all the best.”

The owner of the paper Gannett, through the USA Today Network, said three positions at the paper would be eliminated.

Media reporter Jim Romenesko tweeted Wednesday afternoon that there were “staff reductions” at 37 Gannett publications today.

Gannett has cut its workforce nationwide a number of times over the years to manage costs.

The Sun-News isn’t the only paper that’s part of the network in New Mexico.

The Alamogordo Daily News, Carlsbad Current-Argus, Ruidoso News, Silver City Sun-News, Farmington Daily Times and Deming Headlight are all part of the network as well.

NM Political Report stories have previously appeared in a number of these papers, including the Las Cruces Sun-News.

News director Lucas Peerman is the interim managing editor.

Other outlets have seen cuts in recent months. In November, NM Political Report reported that the state’s largest newspaper, the Albuquerque Journal, cut six jobs including one in the newsroom.
