Republican announces candidacy for Secretary of State

A Republican announced this week she will run for New Mexico Secretary of State.

The Albuquerque Journal reported Wednesday that Albuquerque attorney JoHanna Cox plans to run for the position as a Republican.

According to the Journal, Cox decided to run for Secretary of State to reform election policies and procedures.

Cox, an attorney, has held leadership positions in both the Valencia and Santa Fe County district attorney’s offices, before opening her own private practice.

Cox’s announcement comes days after former Democratic State Representative Sandra Jeff announced her intention to run for Secretary of State as a member of the Libertarian Party. Jeff changed her campaign registration to Libertarian.

Current Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, a Democrat, is running for election to a full term. Toulouse Oliver won the Secretary of State position in a rare presidential-year election in 2016 after former Secretary of State Dianna Duran resigned hours before pleading guilty to charges, including felonies, related to misuse of campaign funds.

Gov. Susana Martinez is set to issue a primary election proclamation at the end of the month, which will outline specifics about the state’s primary election.

While the three candidates have expressed interest in running for office, they still need to register as official candidates with the same office they are running for.
