After Thanksgiving last week, we survived Black Friday and then yesterday Cyber Monday. But today is something very different: It’s Giving Tuesday, a day to at least temporarily shift away from consumerism and instead support worthy causes, including non-profits.
NM Political Report is local non-profit news outlet. We’re a small team, currently with just three reporters and one regular freelancer.
Why is supporting us so important? Despite our small staff and limited resources, we write about important stories no one else will.
Just this weekend, our environment reporter Laura Paksus shrugged off the turkey coma and spent all weekend poring through the 1,000 page report on climate change and its impacts on the country, including the Southwest. You can read all about it here.
And earlier this year, along with some news partners, we sent Laura to Washington D.C. to cover the critical Texas v. New Mexico and Colorado U.S. Supreme Court case that will impact New Mexico’s water future.
On election night, we stayed up as late as needed to keep up with the 2nd Congressional District race. And while other outlets erred and called the race for Yvette Herrell, we made sure and waited until it was clear all the votes were counted—and Torres Small won.
And Andy Lyman has been covering the transition between Gov. Susana Martinez and Governor-elect Michelle Lujan Grisham. The meeting between the two and looking at what positions Lujan Grisham will be able to fill immediately upon taking office are just the tip of the iceberg.
Our stories take time. They take effort. They sometimes take travel and an overnight stay in a hotel room to get the story.
We’ve proven our worth over the last four years—yes, we’ll have our fourth anniversary in just a few weeks—and hope to keep it up for years and years to come.
Help us continue to do the best political reporting in New Mexico.
