Even as Donald Trump’s campaign says it may target New Mexico in 2020, his approval in the state remains very low.

That’s according to the latest polling from Morning Consult, which releases the presidential approval ratings at the state level each month.

This month, Donald Trump’s approval rating stands at just 41 percent, while 56 percent disapprove of his job performance.

Trump’s approval rating in New Mexico was 52 percent at the beginning of 2017 and peaked at 59 percent in April of 2017. But his approval rating has been lower than his disapproval rating in every poll since June of 2017.

Trump’s lowest approval rating in New Mexico was 38 percent in December of last year.

NM in play?

Politico reported this week that the Trump campaign is taking aim at New Mexico, Nevada and New Hampshire as polling shows weakness in Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin—key states he won in 2016.

Politico reported Trump campaign staff are already in place in New Hampshire and Nevada, while they are conducting polling for New Mexico.

Campaign manager Brad Parscale has claimed New Mexico will be in play a number of times, including on CBS’ “Face the Nation” in April, when he said, “I think New Mexico is in play in 2020.”

Republicans suffered heavy electoral losses in New Mexico in 2018. Democrats swept every statewide race, including a large victory in the gubernatorial race, as well as all three congressional races. Democrats also increased their majority in the state House.

And the last Republican presidential candidate to carry New Mexico’s five electoral votes was George W. Bush in 2004, when the incumbent president edged Democrat John Kerry by just under 6,000 votes.

And Trump himself lost by over 8 percentage points to Hillary Clinton in 2016.
