“The people must know before they can act, and there is no educator to compare with the press.” – Ida B. Wells
Ida Bell Wells-Barnett (July 16, 1862 – March 25, 1931) was an African-American journalist, newspaper editor, suffragist, sociologist, and an early leader in the civil rights movement. She documented lynching in the United States, showing how it was often a way to control or punish blacks who competed with whites, often under the guise of rape charges. She was active in women’s rights and the women’s suffrage movement, establishing several notable women’s organizations. Wells was a skilled and persuasive rhetorician, and traveled internationally on lecture tours.
We believe that good government comes from informed and engaged citizens.
New Mexico Political Report is a non-profit news organization focused on promoting a greater public understanding of politics and policy in the state of New Mexico.
Our enterprise and investigative pieces go beyond the press releases and soundbites to cover issues grounded in and responsive to our communities as told by those through the states impacted by those politics and policies.
Where possible we deliberately seek to include voices that represent New Mexico’s unique demography and those not normally represented in traditional media.
NM Political Report is built to deliver real news as fast as it happens in the digital age. Our cutting edge platform allows us to share new stories in real time and engage readers however they choose to access it online. Facebook and Twitter integrations allow readers to comment in real-time, often right alongside decision makers and the reporters covering them.
Traditional news outlets are shrinking their newsroom staffs and, while government and social issues grow more complex, political and feature reporters are often the first to be let go. That means less reporting on the people and issues in politics affecting New Mexicans most.
So we are doing something about it. We assembled some of New Mexico’s top political reporters to take an in-depth look at politics and how it impacts New Mexicans everyday.
Launched in January 2015, the NM Political Report is an online news platform focused on political news, in-depth analysis of critical issues and the voices of insightful people like you.
The news side – an independent not-for-profit project of the ProgressNow NM Education Fund (the publisher enjoys no editorial control over content)– is run by seasoned journalists Matthew Reichbach, Andrew Lyman and Joey Peters (more on them here). Other reporters and readers contribute through our quick reads and community voices pages.
