Trump approval rating in NM steady, still underwater

President Donald Trump’s approval rating remains underwater in New Mexico and many other states, according to the latest Morning Consult poll.

The poll showed Trump’s national approval rating plummeted to a new low for the pollster, at 41 percent approval and 54 percent disapproval. The numbers are nearly the same in New Mexico, where 42 percent of voters approve of the president and 54 percent disapprove. That’s a net approval of -12 percent percentage points.

The poll was conducted from March 1 to March 31.

In the past, Trump’s approval rating in New Mexico has been lower than nationwide.

The New Mexico numbers are virtually unchanged from the February approval ratings.

Morning Consult’s national number is in line with the average of Trump job approval polls as collected by Real Clear Politics, which has Trump’s approval rating at 41.5 percent to a 53.5 percent disapproval rating.

On his Twitter account ,Trump promoted Rasmussen Reports polling that showed his approval rating as high as 51 percent on April 4. The last non-Rasmussen poll to show Trump’s approval rating at above even 45 percent was a McLaughlin & Associates Poll conducted between March 14 and March 19.

Key Senate states see big swings

Meanwhile, Trump saw swings in a number of other states, including a 9 percent fall in Iowa and a 6 percent improvement in New Hampshire.

Republicans currently hold a narrow 51-49 seat advantage in the U.S. Senate. They do, however, have a favorable map when it comes to holding or even possibly gaining Senate seats despite a likely bad cycle for Republicans.

According to Morning Consult, Trump’s approval rating fell in a number of states with battleground U.S. Senate races. In Arizona, his net approval fell four points to -1 percentage points and in Florida it fell two points to an even net approval. In North Dakota, however, his approval rating increased two points to a 10 percentage point net approval and in West Virginia, it rose four points to a net approval of 26 percentage points. Of the six Senate battlegrounds with Trump’s highest approval ratings, all are held by Democrats.

The new data comes from surveys of at total of 97,693 registered voters in all 50 states and Washington D.C.

The numbers in New Mexico have a margin of error of +/- 4 percentage points. The margins of error vary by state.
