DOH: 1,719 new cases of COVID-19, 23 additional deaths

The state Department of Health reported 1,791 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. The department also reported 23 additional deaths related to the disease.

Bernalillo County had the most newly reported cases on Thursday, with 621. Four other counties had 100 or more cases: San Juan County (180), McKinley County (142), Sandoval County (125) and Doña Ana County (109).

DOH also reported one new case among those held by federal agencies at the Torrance County Detention Facility and 25 new cases among those held by the state Department of Corrections at five facilities.

On Thursday, the department reported 916 individuals were hospitalized for COVID-19, a decrease of one person since Wednesday. This could include those from other states who are hospitalized in New Mexico, but would not include New Mexicans who are hospitalized out of state.

DOH provided some information on each of the 23 newly reported deaths that would have been reported on Thursday.

DOH does not disclose which underlying condition any of the deceased had, only if one was present before death.

The most common underlying condition for those who died with COVID-19 was hypertension, followed by diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to the most recently available mortality update. Some of those who died had multiple comorbidities.

DOH has now found 114,731 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and reported 1,846 deaths related to the disease.

Of the confirmed cases, 41,177 were designated as recovered by the department as of Thursday, an increase of 1,119 since Wednesday.

The New Mexico Environment Department’s Rapid Response COVID-19 Watchlist had 125 establishments as of Thursday, four fewer than listed on Wednesday. These workplaces had two or more COVID-19 rapid responses in the last 14 days.

The state coronavirus information page says the state has processed 1,692,676 tests as of Thursday, 23,164 more than reported on Wednesday..

DOH also reported the total number of cases by county, including those reported on Thursday.

The department identified nine previously reported cases as duplicates (two in Bernalillo County and one in each of Curry, Doña Ana, Eddy, McKinley, Roosevelt, San Juan and Santa Fe counties) and one previously reported case from Bernalillo County that was not lab confirmed. These have been removed from the results.

Additionally, two cases previously reported as residents of Santa Fe were determined to be inmates at the Penitentiary of New Mexico, while one case previously reported as a resident of Colfax County was determined to be among inmates at the Northeast New Mexico Correctional Facility.
