A recent poll found that Democrat Kamala Harris leads Republican Donald Trump by eight points in New Mexico in the race for the state’s five electoral votes, while Democrat Martin Heinrich has an even wider lead in the race for U.S. Senate over Nella Domenici.
SurveyUSA conducted the poll of likely New Mexico voters earlier this month for KOB-TV.
The presidential results found Harris, the Vice President, leads Trump, a former President, 50 percent to 42 percent. Additionally, 4 percent said they would vote for another candidate while 3 percent were undecided.
According to the polling memo, Harris is “poised to keep New Mexico blue for the fifth consecutive presidential election.” This is in large part due to large leads among women and Hispanic voters in the state.
Among women, Harris leads Trump 47 percent to 34 percent. Trump, meanwhile, leads among men 49 percent to 44 percent.
When it comes to Hispanic voters, 53 percent back Harris compared to 39 percent who support Trump. White voters back Trump 49 percent to 45 percent.
Harris also has a large lead among self-described moderate voters, with 51 percent saying they would vote for her, compared to 38 percent for Trump. Harris also, unsurprisingly, leads among liberal voters, 88 percent to 10 percent. Trump has a large lead among those who consider themselves conservative, 71 percent to 21 percent.
Senate results
The results in the Senate race showed an even larger lead for the Democrat. Heinrich, the incumbent Democrat, leads Domenici, a former hedge fund executive, 47 percent to 34 percent, with 19 percent who say they’re undecided.
Heinrich leads by 22 points, 50 percent to 28 percent, among women, and leads by 6 points, 45 percent to 39 percent, among men.
He also led among both Hispanic voters (46 percent to 29 percent) and white voters (45 percent to 41 percent).
Domenici, meanwhile, leads 74 percent to 11 percent among Republican voters. Heinrich leads 78 percent to 8 percent among Democratic voters and 44 percent to 24 percent among independent voters.
Heinrich is seeking a third term in the U.S. Senate. Domenici, the daughter of former New Mexico U.S. Senator Pete Domenici, has not previously ran for elected office.
Methodology
SurveyUSA identified 619 voters who said they were almost certain or 100 percent certain to vote in the upcoming elections. The topline questions have a margin of error of +/- 5.4 percent, which means any result can be lower or higher within that margin. Subsamples have larger margins of error. SurveyUSA conducted the poll between Sept. 12 and Sept. 18 and weighted results to U.S. Census data and the 2020 presidential vote.
