NM Political Report won seven awards at the Society of Professional Journalists Region 9 Top of the Rockies this weekend for stories we wrote in 2023. The awards took place in Denver this weekend.
NM Political Report competed in the small newsroom category and the awards included placing first in three categories.
The awards are:
- Breaking News Story. First place: State supreme court upholds congressional map by Nicole Maxwell
- General reporting – series or package. First Place: Protestors block roads into Chaco Culture National Historical Park, leading to change in venue for Haaland’s visit by Hannah Grover
- Politics: News: First place: Guv signs sweeping new voting rights bill into law by Nicole Maxwell
- Public Service: Second place: State prisons outsource personal mail to inmates to Florida firm, causing concern for some by Susan Dunlap
- Science and Technology: News: Second place: ‘The genie is out of the bottle.’ Federal, state officials discuss impacts of AI by Nicole Maxwell
- Science and Technology: News: Third place: ‘What’s the threshold at which you begin to regulate something?’: AI Insight Forums begin by Nicole Maxwell
- Ag and Environment: Feature. Third place: Navajo Nation officials, activists feel cut out as company advances uranium mining plans by Hannah Grover
Previously, Susan Dunlap also won first place for online feature story at the New Mexico Press Women’s annual communications contest for her story A look back at what the last year has wrought about the year following the Dobbs decision. She has since been informed the story placed in the National Federation of Press Women contest, with the final results to be announced in June.
