SJR 11 seeks to hold school elections during partisan elections and was unanimously approved on the Senate floor Thursday.

“In rural New Mexico, sometimes we get caught up in bond elections and there’s a timeline to the bond elections,” bill co-sponor Sen. David Gallegos, R-Eunice, said. “We could run out of money, and this would allow us to set different time requirements for our bonds and be able to meet our capacities on some of the facilities we’re building.”

The resolution had no opposition.

If approved, the ballot question would be on the 2026 general election ballot.

  1. Hi Nicole, I am working on a book for UNM Press titled “Crime & Justice in NM” and am currently doing the background research for it. It contains a chapter on dynamics in the southern part of the state, and I’d like to talk to you about it if you have some time.
