Dem candidate raises more, GOP candidate has more cash in SoS race

Democratic Secretary of State candidate Maggie Toulouse Oliver leads in the latest campaign finance reports, though her Republican opponent Nora Espinoza closes the period out with more cash in her campaign account.

The primary takes place next Tuesday.

Toulouse Oliver raised nearly $59,590 during the latest period, which covers most of May, nearly doubling Espinoza’s $29,807. She also spent $46,858 during the same period, the bulk of her expenses going to Full Arsenal Strategies, the strategy firm that is managing her campaign.

Toulouse Oliver currently reports $125,030 in the bank.

By contrast, Espinoza spent just $581, mostly paying off credit card purchases for what she lists as “T-shirts, decorations etc parade” and “campaign expenses, hotel, gas etc.”

Espinoza reports $148,423 in cash on hand.

The reports outlined fundraising and spending from May 3 to May 31. Any campaign contributions of over $2,500 made after May 31 must be reported within 24 hours from May 31 until June 6.

Toulouse Oliver is the current Bernalillo County Clerk. Espinoza is a state representative.

Toulouse Oliver was the Democratic candidate in 2014, losing to Dianna Duran. Duran resigned shortly before pleading guilty to misusing campaign funds. When she resigned, it triggered a new election in 2016.

Neither candidate has competition in their respective primaries.
