United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be in New Mexico next month for an annual law convention.

Ginsburg will serve as the keynote speaker for the State Bar of New Mexico’s Bar and Bench conference in August.
State Bar executive director Joe Conte said the organization is “excited and grateful” that Ginsburg is willing to come and speak to the legal community.
“She’s a woman who’s got decades of life to share with us,” Conte said.
Ginsburg recently received immense media attention after she made disparaging remarks about presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. Trump responded saying her comments were inappropriate and called on Ginsburg to resign from the Supreme Court. Trump later went after the second ever female justice on social media, saying her “mind is shot.”

Conte said the Bar booked Ginsburg long before she was asked about Trump and that it’s anyone’s guess where the conversation may go.
“She’s a fireball, so who knows what she’ll say,” Conte said.
Conte said Ginsburg’s speech “will be more like a Q&A” with Albuquerque attorney and President of the American Law Institute Roberta Cooper Ramo.
According to Conte, Ginsburg is a fan of the Santa Fe Opera and makes regular trips to New Mexico. In 2014, the Santa Fe New Mexican wrote about Ginsburg’s regular travels to Santa Fe.
Ginsburg, through a representative of the Supreme Court, declined an interview with NM Political Report.
The Bar and Bench Conference is only open to members of the State Bar of New Mexico and will be held at the Buffalo Resort and Casino north of Santa Fe.
The conference will also feature three New Mexico Supreme Court justices on a panel about women serving as lawyers and judges. The three women hold a majority of the state’s high court.
Ginsburg became the second woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court after President Bill Clinton nominated her in 1993.
Ginsburg gained popularity as a politically left-leaning and outspoken member of the Supreme Court and is referred to, by some supporters, as Notorious RBG.
