U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich won reelection to a third term, defeating Republican Nella Domenici.

Heinrich and Domenici held a hard fought race that concluded with Heinrich winning.

The Associated Press called the race for Heinrich at about 8:35 p.m., and as of 12:10 a.m. Wednesday, Heinrich held a lead of 55 percent of the vote over Domenici’s 45 percent.

“Tonight’s victory belongs to every New Mexican who shares our belief that we can build a better, brighter future for our people. But even as we take in this moment, we know that our work is far from over. This election was about much more than any one campaign or candidate. It was about the future we’re building together for New Mexico,” Heinrich said in a press release. “Tonight, we celebrate, but tomorrow, the hard work continues. Thank you again, New Mexico.”

Domenici also released a statement via email.

“Tonight was not the result we had hoped for, but I’m proud of the campaign we ran and the experiences I’ve had over the last eleven months,” Domenici said in a press release. “In the end, this wasn’t a campaign; it was a movement. A movement of people from all walks of life, dedicated to bringing a New Day in New Mexico.”

Heinrich previously won with 54 percent of the vote in a three-way race in 2018, which included former New Mexico governor Gary Johnson running as a Libertarian and Mick Rich running as a Republican, and won with 51 percent of the vote in a three-way race in 2012, defeating former U.S. Rep. Heather Wilson and an independent candidate.
