El Albuquerque Journal reduce personal hasta en la sala de redacción

Hay recortes en el periódico más grande de Nuevo México.

Según Brian Fantl, vicepresidente sénior y jefe de operaciones del periódico, el Alburquerque Journal eliminó seis cargos recientemente, incluyendo uno en la sala de redacción.

Además, cinco reporteros más abandonaron la sala de redacción en las últimas fechas, y no está claro si los puestos quedarán vacantes.

Unos de los puestos, el que ocupó el redactor Ollie Reed, se va a eliminar, confirmó Fantl. Reed fue despedido el jueves.

Otros “tal vez vuelvan con contratos de consultoría”, dijo Fantl.

El periódico revisará otros puestos antes de tomar una decisión, pero “desde luego”, el puesto de editor adjunto no quedará vacante, dijo Fantl.

Un correo electrónico interno de la sala de redacción que NM Political Report obtuvo a finales de octubre sugiere que solamente uno de los cinco miembros del personal de la sala de redacción regresará “como consultor externo”.

Al preguntarle horas antes ese mismo día, Karen Moses, editora del Journal, reveló a NM Political Report que “estamos haciendo algunos cambios en la organización”.

No nos gusta utilizar la palabra “despido”, dijo Moses.

Sin embargo, según una fuente cercana, los recortes están creando ansiedad entre los empleados del periódico.

Según Fantl, de los cinco puestos no pertenecientes a la sala de redacción, tres son de circulación y “probablemente dos” sean de publicidad.

Fantl dijo que los tres puestos de circulación “ya no son necesarios” a causa de la “nueva tecnología” que el Journal está utilizando y que “ha optimizado el flujo” de las rutas de reparto del periódico, mientras que los cometidos de los puestos de publicidad coinciden con los de otros puestos del departamento.

La decisión de eliminar los cinco puestos no pertenecientes a la sala de redacción se tomó esta semana, dijo Fantl.

Fantl no quiso pronunciarse sobre los reporteros que abandonarán o ya han abandonado su puesto, refiriéndose a la situación como un “asunto personal”.

Según el correo electrónico, los cuatro reporteros que se jubilan son:

-Scott Sandlin, taquígrafo. Su último día fue el 1 de noviembre.

– Winthrop Quigley, columnista de UpFront, que dejará su puesto el 11 de noviembre (Quiglet también anunció públicamente su retiro).

-Hendrix, que se marchará el 11 de noviembre.

-Joe Ipsaro, editor adjunto, cuyo último día fue el 29 de octubre.

Además, el reportero de investigación del Journal, Thom Cole, también se fue a finales de octubre para ocupar un puesto en una agencia de la competencia, el Santa Fe New Mexican. El New Mexican es el diario con la segunda mayor tirada del estado, aunque va muy por detrás de la tirada del Journal.

El correo electrónico interno del Journal señalaba que Cole “tiene planes para trabajar a medio tiempo como editor para el New Mexican”, y el anuncio de la contratación de Cole con el periódico de Santa Fe afirma que también “ayudará a dirigir las investigaciones y los proyectos”.

El New Mexican ha aumentado recientemente su enfoque en los reportajes de investigación.

Aparte de Cole, el correo electrónico no describe las circunstancias de la jubilación de Sandlin, Quigley, Hendrix e Ipsaro. Según Fantl, “dos de ellos anunciaron que se retiraban sin más” mientras que “los demás presentaron una solicitud de jubilación”.

Quigley escribió en su página de Twitter que “tiene algunos proyectos de escritura más importantes”.

La eliminación de puestos en el Journal llega en un momento de reducción de ingresos publicitarios en los periódicos de todo el país. Ayer, por ejemplo, el Wall Street Journal anunció despidos en la sala de redacción por este mismo motivo.
