Se viraliza la metedura de pata de Gary Johnson: “¿Qué es Aleppo?”

El exgobernador de Nuevo México Gary Johnson fue centro de atención en los últimos días debido a su candidatura presidencial como libertario, de éxito poco probable; pero la publicidad no fue toda positiva.

Ayer, el ex candidato presidencial republicano Mitt Romney envió un mensaje por Twitter diciendo que le gustaría ver Gary Johnson en los debates presidenciales al lado de la candidata demócrata Hillary Clinton y el candidato republicano Donald Trump. Él también dijo que le gustaría ver su compañero de fórmula Bill Weld in el debate de vicepresidente al lado del compañero de fórmula de Clinton Tim Kaine y el compañero de fórmula de Trump Mike Pence.

Romney no ha endosado a Trump y de hecho es uno de los críticos republicanos más franco sobre Trump.

Aún asi, Romney aún no ha endosado a Johnson, a pesar de los rumores que lo estaba considerando hace unos meses. Y después de la metedura de pata de Johnson la mañana del jueves, puede ser que el endoso nunca llegará.

‘¿Qué es Aleppo?’

Mientras que Johnson recibió atención mediática para su campaña en el pasado, mayormente en perfiles de noticias de la “opción tercera” y comparándole con Clinton y Trump, él atrajo atención masiva después de su aparición el jueves por la mañana en “Morning Joe” de MSNBC.

Ahí, Mike Barnicle preguntó a Johnson, “¿Qué haría usted respecto a Aleppo si fuera elegido?”

Johnson parecía confundido y eventualmente preguntó, “¿Qué es Aleppo?”

Barnicle respondió, “Aleppo es en Syria. Es el epicentro de la crisis de refugiados.”

La confusión sobre Aleppo fue tal vez el primer momento viral de la campaña de Johnson. The New York Times, Washington Post, New Yorker, CNN, NBC News… casi todas las agencias de noticias lo han cubierto.

El error era un regalo para las agencias de noticias.

Vox, por supuesto, hizo lo mismo.

Aleppo no es sólo un sitio de tragedia entre muchos en Siria. Es una crisis humanitaria y unos de los frentes de batalla más importantes en el país- alguien que quiere ser el presidente de los Estados Unidos debe tener cierta familiaridad superficial con el sujeto.

El Times también cubrió la historia, aunque mayormente en relación a informes previos del periódico sobre el asunto de Siria.

Eventualmente, Johnson respondió a la pregunta de qué haría con respecto a Siria.

“Bueno, al respecto de Siria, sí pienso que es un desastre. Pienso que la única manera en que podemos resolver la situación en Siria es colaborar con Rusia para poner un fin a esto de forma diplomática” Johnson dijo a Barnicle.

Johnson explica

Después del momento viral del programa matutino. El equipo de Johnson explicó en una declaración que él “se quedó en blanco”

“Esta mañana, empecé mi día dejando de lado cualquier duda que soy humano,” dijo el candidato. “Sí, entiendo los dinámicos del conflicto de Siria- Yo hablo de eso cada día.”

“¿Cuándo me preguntó ‘¿Qué pienses de Aleppo?’ inmediatamente pensé que era un acrónimo, no el conflicto de Siria. Me quedé en blanco. Estas cosas pasan, y ocurrirán de nuevo a lo largo de la campaña. ¿Puedo nombrar cada cuidad en Siria? No. ¿Hubiera debido identificar Aleppo? Sí. ¿Entiendo su importancia? Sí.”

Johnson también respondió a preguntas de Mark Halperin inmediatamente después de la grabación y él reconoció que debe ser una “gran conmoción”, como Halperin lo describió.

Él contó sobre un recuerdo de cuando se postulaba para gobernador y él se confundió cuando le preguntó sobre las colonias.

Él dijo que no sabía lo que eran, pero “No me dio cuenta que lo llamaron colonias. ¿Esto me descalificará de ser gobernador de Nuevo México? Espero que no.”

El University of New Mexico Bureau of Business and Economic Research describe las colonias como “comunidades rurales que están situadas en proximidad cercana de la frontera de los Estados Unidos y México y que carecen de acceso a servicios básicos como agua, cloacas o viviendas.”

Halperin preguntó a Johnson que tenía que hacer para asegurarse de que esa tipa de cosa no vuelva a suceder.

“Tengo que ser más inteligente” dijo Johnson. “Y esto es parte del proceso.”
