Albuquerque’s Lew Wallace Elementary kindergarten teacher Sonya Romero got a big surprise when she visited the Ellen Degeneres Show.   On Wednesday’s show, Ellen called Sonya out of the audience to profile the teacher Ellen called a “hero.”

Ellen talked about how budget cuts had forced Sonya to dig into her own pocket to provide food, clothes and supplies for her students.  So Ellen got Target to team and donate $10,000 to Sonya and $10,000 to Lew Wallace Elementary to help Albuquerque’s kids.

Sonya is a member of the local Albuquerque Federation of Teachers.  She was also recently featured on KOB-TV’s “Pay it Forward” where she received a local surprise gift from the television station to say thank you for her generosity.
