Hello fellow political junkies!

New Mexico immigrant advocacy groups announced their legislative proposals during a press conference Nov. 22.

The proposals include not allowing state resources to be used for civil and immigration law enforcement, preventing personal information from being shared with third parties including data brokers working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, additional funding for nonprofit organizations to help provide legal representation for immigration cases in rural areas, economic relief for immigrant families with children who lose their income due to I-9 audits, workplace raids and other immigration enforcement, restrict state and local governments from having ICE contracts for civil immigration detention, promote U visa (for some crime survivors) certifications state and local law enforcement to support undocumented crime survivors access social safety net resources, and other aims.

“The legislative platform represents a bold step to protect immigrant workers and families in the face of federal threats,” Santa Fe Dreamers Project Staff Attorney Jessica Aguirre said. “By advancing measures like the U-visa certification process, we can ensure New Mexico remains a place of dignity, safety and opportunity for all our communities.”

The 2025 New Mexico Legislative Session begins in a little more than two months, on Jan. 21. Legislators can pre-file legislation beginning on January 2.
