U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren joined Deb Haaland’s campaign in Albuquerque on Monday to talk about New Mexico’s universal childcare program.

The program launched last November and is the first of its kind in the country to offer free statewide childcare for working families without income limits or copayments. As Americans are becoming more and more frustrated with rising costs and, Democrats are looking for programs like New Mexico’s as an example for how their policies can have real-world impacts making life more affordable for families.

Haaland’s plan expands on the state’s current program launched by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the legislature by making it easier to sign up for childcare, raising pay for childcare workers and expanding childcare options.

Gregg Hull, the Republican nominee for governor, says he supports families having access to child care but wants higher earning families to have a co-pay for subsidies.

Our Jesse Jones and Roberto Rosales went along as Warren and Haaland toured an Albuquerque early childhood center funded through the state’s new program to talk about how New Mexico’s program could serve as an example for other states.
