A day after Yvette Herrell won the Republican primary for the 2nd Congressional District seat she once held, former President Donald Trump endorsed Herrell.
Herrell did not face an opponent in the primary.
Herrell posted a screenshot on her X account of Trump’s endorsement on Truth Social.
“A successful entrepreneur, Yvette knows how to Expand our Economy, Fight Inflation, and Create High-Paying Jobs,” Trump wrote. “She will work hard to Lower Gas Prices, Support our Vets, Strengthen our Military, Secure our Border, and Defend the Second Amendment.”
Herrell responded saying “It’s an honor to have your support and I look forward to working together to restore our country after we both win this November!”
Trump was convicted of financial crimes in New York last week, becoming the first former president to be convicted of a felony.
Herrell backed Trump after the conviction, saying in a statement that “this case was election interference” and said it was a “weaponization of our legal system.”
Herrell will face Gabe Vasquez, the incumbent Democrat who narrowly beat her in 2022, in one of the congressional races with the most attention in a narrowly divided House of Representatives.
Republicans and Herrell have attacked Vasquez over immigration and crime, while Democrats and Vasquez have attacked Herrell over her opposition to abortion and voting for tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.
