President Donald Trump’s approval rating in New Mexico is underwater, a big drop from when he first entered office in January and more New Mexicans approved of his job performance.
Those numbers come from Morning Consult, which released the presidential approval ratings for each of the 50 states Tuesday.
In January, 52 percent of voters approved of Trump, while 35 percent disapproved. In September, that number saw a big shift, with 52 percent disapproving of his job performance and 43 percent approving.

New Mexico is one of the states in the middle of the pack when it came to approving of Trump. In 16 states and the District of Columbia, Trump’s approval rating is below 40 percent. Liberal strongholds Washington D.C. (17 percent approval, 78 percent disapproval), Hawaii (21 percent approval, 64 percent disapproval) and Massachusetts (32 percent approval, 63 percent disapproval) lead the way when it comes to disapproving of Trump’s job performance.
Several conservative, largely rural, states still had strong approval ratings for Trump.
Wyoming voters gave Trump an approval rating of 61 percent compared to 35 percent who disapproved. That’s the lone state that gave Trump an above-60 percent approval rating.
West Virginia (60 percent approval, 36 percent disapproval), Alabama (59 percent approval, 36 percent disapproval) and Louisiana (57 percent approval, 37 percent disapproval) also gave Trump relatively high marks.
In all, 12 states had a majority who approved of Trump’s job performance, while 25 states had a majority of voters that said they disapproved of his job performance.
The poll, conducted between Jan. 20 and Sept. 26 using an online system, polled registered 472,032 voters throughout the country. The poll has a margin-of-error of 4 percent in New Mexico. The pollster’s methodology is available here.
